New Delhi: In a shocking incident that has once again raised concerns over witness safety, a 44-year-old woman was shot dead in broad daylight in northwest Delhi’s Shalimar Bagh on Saturday. The victim, Rachna Yadav, a resident welfare association (RWA) president, was the prime witness in the 2023 murder case of her husband, Vijender Yadav.
The shooting occurred around 11 a.m. as Rachna was returning from a neighbour’s house. According to police, two men arrived on a sports bike, intercepted her, confirmed her identity, and fired at close range before fleeing the scene at high speed. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Murder Appears Premeditated
Police officials said the attack appeared to be carefully planned. Initial investigations suggest that the assailants were aware of Rachna’s movements and targeted her specifically to eliminate a key witness.
Old Rivalry Suspected
Investigators suspect that the murder is linked to the ongoing trial in the Vijender Yadav murder case. Six accused, including Bharat Yadav, were named in that case. While five have been arrested, Bharat Yadav, identified as the prime accused, remains absconding.
Attempt to Silence a Witness
The trial in the 2023 murder case is currently underway, and Rachna’s testimony was considered crucial for securing convictions. Police believe the killing may have been intended to derail the judicial process by silencing a key prosecution witness.
Daughter Alleges Conspiracy
Speaking to the media, Rachna’s daughter, Kanika Yadav, alleged that the same individuals responsible for her father’s murder were behind her mother’s killing. She claimed that the conspiracy was planned even while some of the accused were in jail and named absconding accused Bharat Yadav as the mastermind.
“My mother was killed because she refused to withdraw her testimony,” Kanika said.
Investigation Underway
Delhi Police have registered a case and intensified the investigation. CCTV footage from the area is being examined to identify the attackers and reconstruct their escape route.
