Met Éireann Issues Status Yellow Snow and Ice Warning as Arctic Blast Hits Ireland

Dublin:Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow snow and ice warning for nine additional counties as an Arctic blast sweeps across Ireland, bringing widespread freezing conditions and hazardous travel risks.

The national forecaster said the latest warning predicts wintry showers with accumulations of snow, along with “sharp or severe frost and ice.” The warning remains in effect until 11am tomorrow and applies to all counties in Connacht, as well as Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan and Louth.

Meanwhile, the rest of the country is under a Status Yellow low temperature warning until 11am tomorrow. This includes Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford, Wicklow and all counties in Munster.

Met Éireann has warned that temperatures could fall as low as –6°C overnight in some areas, with widespread sharp to severe frost and icy conditions, particularly on untreated surfaces.

In response to the extreme cold, local authorities and homelessness charities have confirmed that additional emergency bed capacity has been made available in shelters. The Simon Community has urged members of the public who are aware of anyone sleeping rough to contact support services or their local local authority.

Gardaí and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) have also appealed to motorists to exercise extreme caution in the coming days due to potentially treacherous driving conditions. While primary roads will be treated for ice, concerns remain that many secondary routes could become dangerous due to frost and ice accumulation.

Weather Outlook

Tomorrow is expected to bring similarly low temperatures, with ongoing risks from frost and ice. Conditions are forecast to be largely dry and sunny across much of the country, apart from isolated showers in the northwest. Daytime temperatures are expected to range between 1°C and 5°C.

Monday night will see another sharp freeze, with temperatures forecast to drop to around –3°C.

On Tuesday, cloud and rain in western counties may turn to sleet before clearing southeastwards later in the day. Temperatures are expected to improve slightly, possibly reaching highs of up to 8°C. However, conditions will turn cold again overnight, with temperatures between –2°C and 2°C.

Wednesday is forecast to be damp, with temperatures of 1°C to 4°C in the east, while the west may experience milder conditions, with highs of 4°C to 9°C.

The outlook for Thursday remains uncertain, though Met Éireann has indicated that rain may move across the southern half of the country, with temperatures expected to range between 2°C and 6°C.

Authorities continue to advise the public to stay informed of weather updates and take necessary precautions as the cold spell persists.
