Actress Sudha Chandran’s Behaviour at Spiritual Event Sparks Online Debate

Mumbai: A video featuring veteran film and television actress Sudha Chandran from a recent spiritual gathering in Mumbai has gone viral on social media, triggering widespread discussion and mixed reactions among viewers.

The incident reportedly took place on January 3 during a “Mata Ki Chowki”—a devotional event attended by family members and colleagues from the television industry. In the video, Chandran is initially seen dancing and singing along with devotional music. However, as the ceremony progresses, her behaviour appears to change dramatically.

Visuals show the actress becoming visibly emotional, shouting, crying and laughing uncontrollably. Attempts by those present to calm her down were unsuccessful. At one point, Chandran is seen reacting aggressively when someone tries to restrain her, adding to the shock among attendees. She was dressed in a white-and-red sari, with a cloth bearing the words “Jai Mata Di” tied around her forehead.

The video quickly gained traction online, prompting sharply divided reactions. While some social media users described her behaviour as a form of spiritual trance or divine experience, others dismissed it as exaggerated or performative, criticising the actress for what they termed inappropriate conduct at a religious gathering.

Supporters have urged restraint in judging the incident, pointing out that intense emotional responses are not uncommon during devotional ceremonies. Critics, however, argue that the episode appeared staged and unbecoming of a public figure.

Career and Legacy

Sudha Chandran remains one of Indian cinema’s most inspiring figures. After losing a leg in an accident at the age of 16, she returned to the stage and screen using a prosthetic Jaipur Foot, going on to build a successful career as a classical dancer and actor. She won the National Film Award for her performance in Mayuri, a film based on her own life, and has worked across multiple languages including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. She is also widely recognised for her roles in popular television serials such as Naagin.

Despite the controversy surrounding the video, Chandran has not issued an official statement on the matter so far. Meanwhile, fans and well-wishers have expressed concern over her well-being, urging sensitivity and caution in interpreting the incident.
