Quetta/Islamabad: More than 140 people, including militants and civilians, have been killed following a series of coordinated suicide bombings and gun attacks across Pakistan’s southwestern province of Balochistan, the Pakistani military and provincial authorities said.
Balochistan Chief Minister stated on Sunday that Pakistani security forces killed 145 militants within 40 hours of the coordinated assaults, describing the violence as one of the deadliest security challenges in recent years, according to Reuters.
The violence left at least 17 law enforcement personnel and 31 civilians dead, the chief minister said. Earlier, citing the Pakistani military, the Associated Press reported that militants carried out multiple suicide bombings and shooting attacks across the province, killing at least 33 people. In the initial phase of retaliatory operations, security forces said they had killed 92 attackers.
Officials said the toll represents the highest number of militants killed in a single day in Balochistan in decades. The banned Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
According to authorities, the assaults were launched almost simultaneously across multiple districts, targeting civilians, police stations, high-security prisons and paramilitary installations. Security operations remain ongoing as forces continue to hunt for remaining attackers and assess the full scale of the damage.
Balochistan has long been plagued by an insurgency driven by separatist groups accusing the central government of exploiting the province’s natural resources while neglecting local development. The latest violence underscores the persistent security challenges facing Pakistan in the strategically important region.
