Ireland Extends Travel Confirmation Notice Scheme to Ease Holiday Travel for Non-EEA Residents

Dublin: In a move aimed at preventing travel disruptions during the holiday period, Ireland has extended the Travel Confirmation Notice Scheme by a further four weeks, benefiting thousands of non-EEA professionals and their families residing in the country.

The Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) has officially confirmed the extension.

The Department of Justice has prolonged the validity of Irish Residence Permit (IRP) cards that were due to expire at midnight on January 31, extending their acceptance until February 28, mirroring a similar measure implemented last year. The order was issued late on January 30.

Alternative Travel Documents Accepted

Non-EEA residents who have applied online for the renewal of their IRP can travel using a combination of three documents, in place of the physical card:

  • A downloadable Travel Confirmation Notice

  • The most recently issued IRP card

  • Proof of having applied for renewal before the card’s expiry, such as an ISD email receipt

Airlines and border control authorities have been instructed to accept these documents as temporary proof of legal residency, enabling eligible residents to travel while awaiting their new cards.

Measure to Reduce Seasonal Pressure

The ISD initially extended this concession by six weeks in December to ease seasonal pressure at registration offices. Without the measure, delays in receiving IRP cards could have forced residents—particularly employees of multinational companies—to cancel travel plans or apply for costly single-entry re-entry visas.

Eligibility and Travel Advisory

The Department of Justice has clarified that the extension applies only to residents who submitted their renewal applications on time. Individuals who have overstayed their permission are not covered by the scheme and are still required to obtain a re-entry visa.

Authorities have also cautioned travellers that final entry into Ireland remains subject to immigration clearance at the port of entry. Travellers are strongly advised to carry printed copies of all three documents and to carefully review transit-country visa requirements before travelling.
