A sessions court in Gangavathi, Karnataka, has sentenced three men to death in connection with the Hampi gang rape and murder case that shocked the nation earlier this year.
The convicts — Mallesh alias Handimalla, Sai, and Sharanappa — were found guilty of gang raping a 27-year-old Israeli tourist and a 29-year-old homestay owner, and murdering a male tourist from Odisha.
The incident occurred on March 6, 2025, near the Tungabhadra canal in Sanapura, close to Hampi. According to the prosecution, the three accused approached the Israeli tourist, the homestay operator, and three male tourists late at night, allegedly demanding money.
When the group refused, the assailants pushed the three male tourists into the canal and sexually assaulted the two women. Two of the men managed to swim to safety, while the third tourist, who was from Odisha, drowned. His body was recovered two days later.
Earlier this month, on the ninth, the Additional District and Sessions Court in Gangavathi had convicted the three men, holding that the prosecution had conclusively established their guilt.
While pronouncing the sentence, the court described the crime as falling within the “rarest of rare” category and stated that it warranted the maximum penalty under law. The case had triggered widespread outrage across the country due to the brutality of the assault and the murder of a visiting tourist.
