Mexico City: Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho” and regarded as one of the world’s most dangerous narcotics kingpins, has been killed following a fierce confrontation with Mexican security forces. He was 59.
Oseguera was the founder and leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), a criminal organisation that rose rapidly to become one of Mexico’s most violent and influential drug trafficking networks. The Mexican military confirmed his death in an official statement.
Dramatic Final Hours
According to authorities, Oseguera sustained severe injuries during the operation and died while being airlifted to Mexico City for emergency treatment. The high-risk mission was reportedly conducted with intelligence support from U.S. agencies.
The United States had previously announced a reward of up to $15 million for information leading to his capture, underscoring his status as a top priority for international law enforcement.
Violence Erupts in Western Mexico
News of Oseguera’s death triggered widespread unrest in western Jalisco, a stronghold of the CJNG. Cartel members reportedly set fire to vehicles and blocked more than 20 major roads in an apparent show of force. The violence spread to neighbouring areas, paralysing daily life.
In the state capital, Guadalajara, streets were left deserted as shops and petrol stations shut down amid fears of further reprisals.
Government Response
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum appealed for calm, assuring citizens that security forces had intensified patrols to restore order and maintain stability.
Military officials confirmed that, in addition to Oseguera, six other suspected cartel members were killed during the clash. Three soldiers were injured. Authorities also seized a cache of heavy weaponry at the scene, including rocket launchers.
A Major Blow to Mexico’s Drug Trade
U.S. officials described Oseguera as among the most ruthless figures in the global narcotics trade, calling his death a significant milestone in the international fight against organised crime.
Analysts say the operation represents one of the most consequential blows to Mexico’s drug cartels since the arrest of Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán and the detention of Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada, both senior figures of the Sinaloa cartel.
While the killing of “El Mencho” marks a pivotal moment in Mexico’s ongoing security campaign, authorities remain on alert amid concerns that the power vacuum within the CJNG could spark further instability in the region.
