Kanpur: In a dramatic development in the high-profile Lamborghini crash that shook the city, Shivam Mishra — son of prominent tobacco industrialist K.K. Mishra — has been arrested by the police. The arrest comes after investigators and the court rejected what authorities describe as a staged attempt to shield the real accused in the case. Shivam was taken into custody from outside his residence in Arya Nagar.
The Accident and ‘VIP Treatment’ Controversy
The incident occurred on February 8 on Kanpur’s VIP Road, when a speeding Lamborghini allegedly rammed into pedestrians, leaving six people injured. The case quickly triggered public outrage, with allegations that the accused had been granted “VIP treatment” by local police.
Reports that the luxury car was covered and parked inside the police station premises — allegedly in the Station House Officer’s designated parking area — further fueled criticism. The issue escalated politically after Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav raised concerns over the handling of the case, prompting Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to order strict action.
‘Driver’ Defence Collapses in Court
In a significant twist, the Mishra family’s driver, Mohan, appeared before the court claiming that he had been driving the vehicle at the time of the accident. He alleged that Shivam Mishra had suffered an epileptic episode, causing him to lose control of the car.
However, the court rejected the driver’s claims, citing multiple inconsistencies and evidence gathered during the investigation.
Key factors that led to the collapse of the defence include:
-
Technical Inaccuracy: Mohan stated in court that the Lamborghini had nine gears. Automotive experts clarified that the model in question has only eight gears, including reverse — raising doubts about his familiarity with the vehicle.
-
Video Evidence: Surveillance and eyewitness footage reportedly show bouncers arriving at the scene immediately after the crash, breaking the car’s windshield, and removing Shivam Mishra from the driver’s seat. Witnesses have stated that no one else was inside the vehicle.
-
Scientific Evidence: Police confirmed that Shivam Mishra’s mobile phone location data placed him on VIP Road at the time of the accident.
Settlement Claim Rejected
The defence counsel informed the court that an out-of-court settlement had been reached with one of the injured complainants, Mohammad Tausif, and that medical expenses had been covered. However, Deputy Commissioner of Police Atul Kumar Srivastava clarified that there was no official confirmation of any such settlement and affirmed that the investigation would proceed rigorously.
Shivam Mishra has since been remanded to judicial custody. Authorities are also examining whether any officials attempted to influence or manipulate the course of the investigation.
As the probe continues, the case remains under intense public and political scrutiny, with questions being raised about accountability, privilege, and the rule of law.
