Missing Indian Student Found Dead in California; Consulate Extends Support to Family

San Francisco: A 22-year-old Indian student who had been reported missing in the United States since February 9 has been found dead, authorities confirmed on Sunday. The body of Saketh Sreenivasaiah was recovered from Lake Anza near the Berkeley Hills by local police, according to the Indian Consulate in San Francisco.

Saketh, a postgraduate student at the University of California, Berkeley, was originally from Tumakuru in Karnataka. He was last seen near a lake at Tilden Regional Park in California.

In a statement posted on X, the Consulate General of India in San Francisco said it “deeply regrets to inform that local police have confirmed the recovery of the body of the missing Indian student, Saketh Sreenivasaiah.” The Consulate extended heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones during what it described as a profoundly difficult time.

The mission added that it stands ready to provide all necessary assistance to the family, including coordination with local authorities and arrangements for the repatriation of Saketh’s mortal remains. Consular officers are reportedly in direct contact with the family to facilitate required formalities and services.

The confirmation came just a day after the Consulate had expressed deep concern over Saketh’s disappearance and stated that it was in touch with both his family and local law enforcement agencies.

Saketh’s father, Sreenivasaiah, had earlier told news agency PTI that he last spoke with his son on February 9. The family had been actively coordinating with his roommates and others in an effort to locate him. After searching all known locations, his roommates filed a formal missing person complaint with the Berkeley Police Department.

On February 13, Saketh’s parents wrote to Karnataka Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh seeking the state government’s support and intervention. Subsequently, the Karnataka government requested the Ministry of External Affairs to extend comprehensive assistance through diplomatic channels. In a letter to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Rajneesh urged coordination with local law enforcement and support for the grieving family.

Saketh was pursuing a Master of Science in the Product Development Programme at the University of California, Berkeley. According to his LinkedIn profile, he previously graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, where he earned a Bachelor of Technology degree in Chemical Engineering.

Authorities have not yet disclosed further details regarding the circumstances surrounding his death. The investigation remains ongoing.
