Three individuals accused in connection with the AI Summit protest case were arrested in Shimla on Wednesday following a dramatic standoff between the Delhi Police and the Himachal Pradesh Police.
The accused have been identified as Saurabh Singh (28), a resident of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh; Siddharth Avadhoot (33), from Tilak Nagar in Madhya Pradesh; and Arbaaz Khan (24), from Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh. A local court granted transit remand to the Delhi Police at approximately 1 am on Thursday, allowing the accused to be taken to the national capital. They are expected to reach Delhi by 12 pm.
Before being transported, the Delhi Police team took the accused to Ambala Civil Hospital for medical examination, in compliance with procedural requirements.
The high-voltage confrontation began around 9 am on Wednesday when a Delhi Police team arrived in Rohru, nearly 120 kilometres from Shimla, and detained the three men from a resort in the Chirgaon Mandali area. Upon being alerted, the Himachal Pradesh Police established blockades at multiple locations, including ISBT Shimla, Shoghi, and Dharampur in Solan district, intercepting vehicles belonging to the Delhi Police.
By around 4 pm, Shimla Police had assumed custody of the accused and subsequently produced them before a local court.
Himachal Pradesh Police contended that due legal procedures were not properly followed during the arrests. Meanwhile, the defence opposed the grant of transit remand, alleging illegal detention and citing the absence of proper documentation and mandatory medical examination at the time of arrest.
After hearing submissions from both sides, the court granted transit remand to the Delhi Police. Advocate Nand Lal Thakur, representing the Delhi Police, stated that the accused would be transported to Delhi and produced before the competent court for further proceedings.
In addition, the Delhi Police are transporting a Thar vehicle believed to be linked to the accused as part of the ongoing investigation.
Further legal proceedings are expected to take place in Delhi.
