Faridabad: A tragic accident at the Surajkund Mela in Haryana’s Faridabad district claimed the life of a police officer and left at least 13 others injured on Saturday evening, after a high-capacity “tsunami” swing collapsed during operation.

The deceased has been identified as Police Inspector Jagdish Prasad. Officials said the officer rushed to the site immediately after the ride malfunctioned and was attempting to rescue those trapped when he sustained fatal injuries. Another video clip shows the damaged swing left hanging precariously before crashing down, even as riders were trying to disembark following the initial collapse.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved family. In a statement posted on social media platform X, the Chief Minister said he was “deeply saddened” by the accident at the Surajkund Mela and assured that immediate and appropriate medical treatment was being provided to all those injured. He further stated that the state government was committed to extending all possible assistance to the affected individuals and their families with promptness and sensitivity.
The accident occurred at approximately 6.15 pm on Saturday. Reports also indicate that earlier in the day, a gate at the fair’s food court area had collapsed due to strong winds, raising questions about safety arrangements and structural preparedness at the venue.
The Surajkund Mela, one of India’s largest and most celebrated cultural fairs, attracts thousands of visitors from across the country every year. The tragic incident has cast a shadow over the ongoing event and has renewed calls for stricter safety checks and oversight at large public gatherings.
