Banda (Uttar Pradesh): The growing pursuit of social media attention has once again ended in tragedy, as a 27-year-old woman lost her life while allegedly attempting to film an Instagram reel in Banda district. What was meant to be a staged dramatic scene reportedly turned fatal after a simulated hanging went horribly wrong.
The incident occurred on the evening of February 2 in the Karuiya Purva area of Baberu.
Attempt to Film Reel Leads to Tragic Accident
According to police and family members, the deceased, Mohini, wife of Jagdish, was an avid social media user who frequently created short-form videos. On the day of the incident, she was reportedly filming a dramatic hanging scene inside her room using her mobile phone.
To record the video, Mohini allegedly tied a noose to a hook in the ceiling, stood on a stool, and placed the rope around her neck. During the process, she is believed to have either lost her balance or slipped, causing her feet to come off the stool. The staged act quickly turned into a real hanging, resulting in her death within moments.
Four-Year-Old Daughter Raises Alarm
The tragic episode came to light when Mohini’s four-year-old daughter entered the room and found her mother hanging. The child’s screams alerted family members and neighbours, who rushed to the spot.
Although Mohini was immediately brought down, she was found unresponsive and declared dead. The incident has left the family and the local community in a state of shock and grief.
Police Term It an Accidental Death
Following the incident, personnel from Baberu Kotwali police station, along with senior officials, reached the scene. The body was taken into custody and sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Superintendent of Police Palas Bansal said preliminary findings indicate that the death was accidental. “Initial investigation suggests the incident occurred while the woman was filming a reel. The body has been sent for post-mortem, and the matter is being examined from all angles,” he said.
Renewed Concerns Over Risky Social Media Content
The incident has once again highlighted the potential dangers of performing risky stunts for social media content. Police officials and local residents have urged people, especially young users, to exercise caution and avoid life-threatening acts in pursuit of online popularity.
Further investigation is underway, and authorities are awaiting the post-mortem report to confirm the circumstances surrounding the death.
