Chandpur: An incident of alleged sexual violence has been reported from Chandpur, just a week after Bangladesh concluded its national elections and a new government led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) assumed office.
According to local reports, a 25-year-old Hindu woman, who is physically disabled, was allegedly abducted from a kirtan gathering on Sunday night and subsequently gang-raped by three men. The survivor is currently undergoing medical treatment at a hospital.
Sources indicate that the woman has identified the accused individuals. However, as of the latest updates, no arrests have been reported.
Renewed Focus on Minority Safety
The incident has reignited concerns over the security of minority communities in Bangladesh. Between early December 2025 and mid-January 2026, reports suggest that between 11 and 15 members of the Hindu community were killed in various parts of the country.
The recent wave of violence follows heightened political tensions after the 2024 ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Documented incidents during this period have included lynchings, stabbings and shootings. While some attacks were reportedly linked to allegations of blasphemy, others occurred in the aftermath of protests and mob unrest. In several cases, perpetrators were alleged to have links to Islamist groups, though many remain unidentified.
Among the reported victims were Dipu Chandra Das, a garment worker who was lynched in Mymensingh on December 18, 2025; Rana Kanti Bairagi, a Hindu newspaper editor shot in Jessore on January 5, 2026; Mani Chakraborty, who was fatally stabbed in Narsingdi; and businessman Khokon Chandra Das, who was killed south of Dhaka.
Authorities are yet to release detailed statements regarding the Chandpur incident. Human rights observers have called for swift investigation, accountability for the perpetrators, and strengthened measures to ensure the safety and protection of vulnerable communities.
