New Delhi: Uday Bhanu Chib, the All India President of the Indian Youth Congress, was arrested in connection with protests held during the Global Artificial Intelligence (AI) Summit in the national capital. According to the Delhi Police, Chib was identified as the principal organiser behind the demonstration that took place at Bharat Mandapam.
Police sources said Chib had been served a notice on Monday directing him to appear for questioning at Tilak Marg Police Station. Officials alleged that he did not fully cooperate with investigators and attempted to evade direct responses during interrogation.
Protest and Police Action
The controversy stems from a demonstration staged by Youth Congress workers outside Bharat Mandapam during the AI Summit. Protesters reportedly removed their shirts and raised slogans such as “Compromised PM,” alleging that the Prime Minister had compromised the nation’s integrity. The protest drew sharp political reactions amid the high-profile international gathering.
Investigators have alleged that Chib played a central role in planning and orchestrating the protest. Congress MP Sasikanth Senthil stated that Chib was taken into custody around 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday and was detained for nearly 20 hours. He is expected to be produced before a court following formal arrest procedures.
BJP’s Strong Reaction
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) welcomed the arrest, accusing the Congress party of engaging in what it described as “anti-India” and “anti-development” politics. BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari criticised the protest on the social media platform X, calling it inappropriate during a global AI summit.
The BJP also demanded an apology from Rahul Gandhi, alleging that the protest was aimed at defaming the Prime Minister. Party workers staged demonstrations in several states condemning the Congress leadership over the incident.
The developments have added to the growing political friction between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress, particularly at a time when India is seeking to position itself as a key global player in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.
