Ireland: Status yellow alerts issued for 17 counties

Met Eireann has warned of more rain in Ireland, with three status yellow alerts issued for 17 counties.

The Status Yellow rain warning issued by Met Eireann for five counties from tonight has now been extended to 17 counties.

The National Weather Service has issued a warning of rain across all of Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Cork, Tipperary and Waterford counties from 11pm tonight until 11pm tomorrow. The rain is expected to continue for another six days.

A status yellow wind warning has been issued for Dublin, Wexford, Wicklow, Meath and Louth. The warning comes into effect at 11pm on Tuesday and will remain in effect until 1pm on Wednesday.

A Status Yellow rain warning has been issued for Cork, Waterford, Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow and Dublin from 11pm on Tuesday until 11pm on Wednesday.

Water levels remain high in several river basins in the Southeast. Given the saturated nature of the land, businesses and homeowners have been asked to take precautions.

A Status Yellow warning for rain and snow has been issued for Donegal, Sligo and Leitrim from 2am on Wednesday until 2pm. The National Weather Service has warned that heavy rain could turn into sleet or snow.

The hope is that nighttime temperatures will rise above zero and rain will give way to milder weather after last weekend's arctic weather.

After historic rainfall in January, February is likely to threaten new rainfall records, with indications that nationally in Ireland, rainfall could be up to 20 per cent above normal average.

Parts of Ireland received more than 200 percent of normal rainfall in the first week of February.

The Wexford and Wicklow areas received more than 220mm of rain in the two weeks between late January and early February - heavy rains resulting from Storm Chandra also caused some of the worst flooding seen in years in parts of Enniscorthy, Inistioge, Grieguenamanagh, Thomastown and Rathfarnham in Dublin.

"Tuesday will be cold, with snow and ice at first," and "it will be a mostly dry day with sunshine starting, but clouds will thicken from the southwest throughout the day, with rain and drizzle gradually spreading across Munster, with the possibility of snow falling in the higher areas with highs of 2C to 6C."

Meteorologists said the weather will remain unstable next week.
