Visakhapatnam: The Bay of Bengal is set to host the prestigious International Fleet Review (IFR), a grand maritime spectacle that underscores India’s growing stature in naval security and global diplomacy. Widely regarded as one of Asia’s largest naval showcases, the event will see participation from naval forces of 72 nations, including global powers such as the United States and Russia.
A Display of Naval Strength
More than 60 warships and submarines will participate in the ceremonial review, reflecting the operational depth and technological sophistication of modern naval forces. Among them is India’s indigenously built aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, symbolising the country’s expanding maritime capabilities and commitment to self-reliance in defence production.
Presidential Review at Sea
The Supreme Commander of the Indian Armed Forces, Droupadi Murmu, will preside over the ceremony and review the assembled fleet. The President will conduct the formal inspection aboard the indigenously built naval vessel INS Sumoy, sailing past rows of participating warships and submarines in a time-honoured maritime tradition.
The three-hour-long ceremonial parade will commence in the morning, with the Governor and Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh accompanying the President for the historic occasion.
Strategic Significance
The simultaneous presence of advanced naval platforms from both the United States and Russia adds significant geopolitical weight to this year’s Fleet Review. Beyond the stately parade of ships, the event will feature aerial fly-pasts by naval aircraft and displays by submarines—often referred to as the silent sentinels of the deep—demonstrating the multidimensional strength of participating navies.
