Iran on Wednesday claimed that it fired cruise missiles toward the US aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, prompting the warship to alter its position in the Persian Gulf region. The assertion was made in a statement broadcast by Iranian state television.
According to the statement, shore-based Qader cruise missiles deployed by the Iranian Navy targeted the US carrier, compelling it to move. Tehran described the action as a demonstration of its maritime sovereignty and a warning against perceived threats in its territorial waters.
Tehran Issues Warning of Further Action
Iranian officials cautioned that additional strikes could follow if US naval assets approach within range of its missile systems. State broadcaster Press TV quoted Navy Commander Rear Admiral Shahram Irani as stating that movements of the US carrier strike group are under constant surveillance.
He added that any “hostile approach” would be met with “powerful strikes” from Iranian naval forces.
No Immediate US Response
As of now, the United States has not officially responded to the latest claims. The USS Abraham Lincoln is currently deployed in the region as part of US military operations amid the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
Conflicting Claims Amid Ongoing Tensions
This is not the first such claim by Tehran. On March 6, Iranian state media reported that drones launched by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had struck the same carrier. However, the Pentagon dismissed the report, stating that the projectiles “did not come close” to the vessel.
The United States currently maintains two aircraft carrier strike groups in the Middle East, reflecting heightened military readiness as tensions in the region continue to escalate.
Strategic Context
Iran’s latest claim underscores the volatile nature of the maritime domain in the Persian Gulf, a region critical to global energy supplies and international shipping. Analysts note that such assertions—whether verified or disputed—contribute to rising geopolitical uncertainty and increase the risk of miscalculation.
