A disturbing incident reported from the northern Indian state of Haryana has triggered widespread outrage on social media during the Holi festivities. A viral video appears to show a group of intoxicated men forcibly making a cow consume alcohol amid celebrations.
The footage, widely circulated online, allegedly captures a group stopping a cow that was pulling a cart, restraining the animal and pouring alcohol directly into its mouth. In the video, two individuals can be seen forcefully holding the cow’s mouth open while another empties a bottle into it. Others nearby appear to encourage the act.
The video was shared by the Instagram page Street Dogs of Bombay and has since garnered hundreds of thousands of views. The clip has sparked strong reactions from animal welfare advocates and members of the public, many of whom have condemned the act as cruel and inhumane.
Social media users expressed anger and disbelief, with several questioning how such behaviour could occur during a festival that symbolises the triumph of good over evil. Others called for immediate action from law enforcement authorities, tagging local police officials and demanding accountability.
Holi, one of the most significant festivals in Hinduism, is traditionally celebrated with vibrant colours, music and festive foods such as gujiya, malpua and thandai. It marks the victory of good over evil and is intended to promote joy, unity and renewal.
Animal rights activists have reiterated concerns about the misuse and mistreatment of animals during public celebrations. The incident has reignited debate about the need for stricter enforcement of animal protection laws and greater public awareness regarding humane conduct during festivals.
Authorities have yet to issue a detailed statement on the matter, but the incident continues to draw widespread condemnation online.
