New Delhi: Tensions escalated in Uttam Nagar after a 25-year-old man was beaten to death during a clash between two neighbouring families belonging to different communities during the Holi celebrations. The incident triggered protests in the area on Friday, prompting authorities to tighten security and deploy additional police forces.
According to reports citing Press Trust of India, the victim, identified as Tarun, was fatally injured following an altercation that began when an 11-year-old girl threw a water-filled balloon on the road, and the coloured water reportedly splashed onto a woman from another community. The situation quickly escalated after a heated exchange of words between neighbours, during which the woman allegedly used abusive language.
The argument soon turned into a violent confrontation, with several individuals from both sides sustaining injuries. Tarun suffered severe injuries during the clash and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The incident sparked widespread anger in the locality. Protesters gathered beneath the Delhi Metro station at Uttam Nagar East, where demonstrators reportedly associated with groups such as the Bajrang Dal and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad staged protests. During the unrest, a car and a motorcycle were set on fire, and traffic on a major road was blocked for several hours.
Police have arrested four individuals in connection with the incident, and further investigations are currently underway.
Meanwhile, authorities have significantly increased security in the area to prevent further escalation. Kushal Pal Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police for the Dwarka district, said extensive arrangements have been made to maintain peace.
“In view of the incident that occurred on March 4, we have made adequate security arrangements. The area has been divided into zones, sectors, and sub-sectors, and our motorcycles and patrol vehicles are continuously monitoring the locality,” Singh said.
Police officials stated that the situation is currently under control, while security forces remain on high alert to ensure law and order in the sensitive area.
