In a significant push for electoral inclusivity, the Election Commission (EC) announced on Monday that approximately 2.37 lakh electors—comprising senior citizens aged 85 and above and Persons with Disabilities (PwD)—have been approved for home voting. This initiative precedes the upcoming polls scheduled for April 9 across Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry.
Under the provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, these specific demographics are entitled to the home voting facility. This process involves polling officials visiting the residences of eligible voters to facilitate the completion of postal ballots, ensuring that physical constraints do not impede the democratic right to vote.
Key Statistics and Participation
According to the latest EC data, the uptake of this optional service highlights a strong preference among the elderly:
- Senior Citizens (85+): 1.67 lakh electors have opted for the facility, representing 53% of the total registered voters in this age bracket.
- Persons with Disabilities (PwD): 70,499 electors have chosen home voting, accounting for 15% of the total PwD electorate.
Implementation Timeline
The home voting process is currently underway in Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry. The Election Commission has set a deadline of April 5 for the completion of these doorstep ballots, ensuring all votes are collected well ahead of the primary polling date.
"Remaining 85+ and PwD electors who haven't opted for optional home voting will be provided with all necessary facilities at the polling stations," the EC stated, reaffirming its commitment to accessibility for those who prefer to vote in person.
By streamlining these procedures, the Commission aims to maximize voter turnout and uphold the integrity of the universal adult franchise, particularly for those who face the greatest barriers to reaching a polling booth.
