Ireland: The family of Claire Cullen, a Co Wexford woman who was killed in a hit-and-run incident in the Dominican Republic, has called on the Government of Ireland to assist in ensuring those responsible are brought to justice.
Ms Cullen, a native of Riverchapel, Gorey, had travelled abroad in November to attend her brother’s wedding when the fatal incident occurred. She is survived by her husband Ronan and their three children.
Locally, Ms Cullen was known as a skilled and accomplished hairdresser who ran her own home-based salon, Eden Hair Design. She has been widely remembered as a kind, popular, and talented individual whose sudden death has left the community in deep shock.
The family, based in Ireland, is seeking assurances from the Department of Foreign Affairs that all possible measures will be taken to support their pursuit of justice. The appeal has also been echoed by Deputy Brennan, who described the tragedy as “every family’s worst nightmare” and stressed the importance of accountability for those responsible.
Deputy Brennan also acknowledged the efforts made to repatriate Ms Cullen’s remains, noting the family’s appreciation for the support provided by the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust, the Irish Consulate, and the Department of Foreign Affairs during that process.
According to Ms Cullen’s sister-in-law, Helen Cullen, the victim died instantly following the collision, while the driver fled the scene without offering assistance. “Our family is completely heartbroken,” she said, adding that their primary focus is supporting Ms Cullen’s husband and children during this devastating time.
A fundraising campaign has since been launched to help the family meet legal expenses as they seek to pursue a case against the alleged perpetrator. The family emphasised that while legal costs should not burden grieving relatives, they are committed to securing justice for Ms Cullen and her loved ones.
As efforts continue, the case has drawn attention to the challenges faced by families seeking legal recourse across international jurisdictions, underscoring the need for sustained diplomatic and legal support.
