The 19th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to commence on March 28 and will run through May 31, featuring 10 franchises competing across 13 venues across India. The season opener will see defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru take on Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, which is also expected to host the final on May 31, subject to confirmation.
As one of the world’s most-watched T20 leagues, the IPL will once again bring together a host of international stars, with expectations high for new milestones across batting, bowling, and fielding categories.
Team Records
Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings continue to dominate the league’s history, each holding five IPL titles. Chennai Super Kings also lead in consistency, with a record 10 final appearances and 12 playoff qualifications. Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, have played the most matches (277) and registered 153 victories, including two wins via Super Over.
In terms of single-season performance, both Rajasthan Royals (2008) and Mumbai Indians (2013) hold the record for most wins in a season with 13 each. At the other end of the spectrum, Delhi Capitals hold the record for most defeats overall (141), while Deccan Chargers, Pune Warriors, and Delhi Capitals share the unwanted record for most losses in a single season.
The highest team total in IPL history remains Sunrisers Hyderabad’s 287/3 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2024, while the lowest total is 49 all out by RCB against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2017.
Individual Batting Records
Virat Kohli leads the all-time run charts with 8,661 runs from 259 innings, maintaining an average of 39.54 and a strike rate of 132.85. He also holds the record for the most runs in a single season, scoring 973 runs in IPL 2016.
Chris Gayle continues to hold several landmark records, including the highest individual score (175*), most sixes in IPL history (357), and most sixes in an innings (17).
Bowling Records
Yuzvendra Chahal leads the all-time wicket-takers with 221 wickets at an economy rate of 7.96. The best bowling figures in IPL history belong to Alzarri Joseph, who recorded 6/12 in 2019.
Harshal Patel and Dwayne Bravo jointly hold the record for most wickets in a single season (32 each), while Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, James Faulkner, and Jaydev Unadkat share the record for most five-wicket hauls (two each).
Wicketkeeping Records
MS Dhoni dominates the wicketkeeping charts with 201 dismissals, including 154 catches and 47 stumpings. Kumar Sangakkara holds the record for most dismissals in a single innings (5 catches), while Rishabh Pant recorded the most dismissals in a season (24) in 2019.
Fielding Records
Virat Kohli also leads in fielding with 117 career catches, while AB de Villiers holds the record for most catches in a single season (19 in 2016). Mohammad Nabi and Daryl Mitchell jointly share the record for most catches in an innings (5).
Miscellaneous Records
MS Dhoni remains the most experienced player in IPL history with 278 matches and also leads as the most successful captain, having led in 235 matches with 136 wins.
