Dubai:The ongoing tensions in West Asia continue to disrupt lives across the region, affecting travel, healthcare access, and family emergencies. Among those caught in the crisis is the family of Thilakkumar Jalathu Aniruthraraj, an Indian expatriate who has been living in Dubai for the past eight years.
According to a report by NDTV, Thilakkumar’s mother has been undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) at a Dubai hospital for the past 40 days. The cost of treatment has placed an enormous financial burden on the family, with daily ICU expenses reportedly reaching ₹3 lakh. As a result, the total medical bill has already climbed to around ₹1.5 crore—an overwhelming amount for a salaried professional.
Doctors treating the patient told NDTV that she will likely require ventilator support for at least another two months, making continued treatment in Dubai financially unsustainable for the family.
War Disruptions Complicate Medical Repatriation
Facing mounting medical costs, the family decided to pursue medical repatriation to India, where long-term treatment would be significantly more affordable. Doctors had cleared the patient to travel on a commercial medical escort flight, scheduled for March 4, with an estimated cost of about ₹7 lakh.
However, the escalating conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States has severely disrupted air travel across the region, leading to the cancellation of their scheduled flight.
With commercial options no longer available, the family’s only remaining option is to arrange a private air ambulance. Due to the ongoing conflict and airspace restrictions, the cost of such an evacuation has reportedly surged nearly sevenfold, rising to around ₹50 lakh—placing the family in an even more desperate situation.
The case highlights how the escalating geopolitical crisis in West Asia is having deep humanitarian consequences, affecting not only governments and economies but also ordinary families struggling to navigate emergencies amid disrupted travel and soaring costs.
