COLOMBO / NEW DELHI — Sri Lankan authorities have confirmed that at least 87 personnel were killed following a precision strike by a U.S. Navy submarine on an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean. The vessel, identified as the IRIS Dena, was intercepted and sunk near Sri Lankan territorial waters early Wednesday morning.
Sri Lankan State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arun Hemachandra, provided the official casualty figures, noting that the frigate was carrying approximately 180 crew members at the time of the engagement.
Rescue Operations and Survivors
Following the strike, Sri Lankan maritime units launched an emergency search and rescue mission.
- Rescued: 32 crew members were successfully pulled from the water by Sri Lankan authorities.
- Missing: Dozens remain unaccounted for, though hopes for further survivors are fading given the nature of the underwater strike.
- Casualties: 87 confirmed dead.
Strategic Context: From Naval Exercise to War Zone
The sinking of the IRIS Dena marks a significant expansion of the current U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran into the vital shipping lanes of the Indian Ocean.
According to regional reports, the Iranian warship was returning from Visakhapatnam, India, where it had recently participated in a multi-national naval exercise. The attack occurred as part of a broader "theatre-wide" offensive by U.S. and Israeli forces aimed at neutralizing Iranian military assets globally.
Escalation of Hostilities
Pentagon officials confirmed that the strike was carried out by a nuclear-powered attack submarine stationed in the region. The move is seen as a strategic effort to block Iranian naval maneuvers and signal to Tehran that its assets are vulnerable even far from the Persian Gulf.
The Sri Lankan government has expressed grave concern over the proximity of the combat to its shores, as the island nation finds itself on the periphery of an intensifying international conflict.
