Ireland is poised to experience its warmest day of the year so far, as a brief spell of unseasonably warm and sunny weather moves across the country.
Temperatures are forecast to rise to a mild 18°C on Thursday, accompanied by widespread sunshine that could make conditions feel even warmer in some areas. In a notable contrast, parts of Spain—including popular destinations such as Benidorm and Barcelona—are expected to record lower temperatures of around 14°C.
The shift in weather patterns is being driven by a high-pressure system settling over Ireland, effectively pushing away the typical Atlantic systems that bring cloud, wind, and rain. Such conditions are relatively uncommon for March, a month usually characterised by unsettled and variable weather. Meteorologists note that this type of stable high-pressure system is more typical of the summer months, offering a preview of warmer conditions ahead.
According to Met Éireann, any early mist or fog will quickly clear on Thursday morning, giving way to a dry, bright, and sunny day with peak temperatures of 18°C.
The settled weather is expected to persist into Friday, which will remain largely dry with abundant sunshine and temperatures around 16°C.
By Saturday, conditions will continue to be mostly dry with hazy sunshine, although temperatures are forecast to ease slightly to between 11°C and 14°C. There is also a possibility of light rain or drizzle affecting parts of the northwest.
A gradual change is anticipated on Sunday, with the best of the weather likely in the early part of the day before cloud cover increases. More persistent rainfall is expected to develop later across regions such as Connacht and Ulster, with temperatures ranging between 10°C and 13°C.
Forecasters are advising the public to make the most of the current warm spell, as more unsettled conditions are expected to return early next week. Met Éireann indicated that the period ahead will be cooler, with spells of rain and showers, accompanied by breezy to windy conditions at times.
