KOTTAYAM – The family of a young man from Aladi has approached the Kerala Chief Minister seeking assistance after losing contact with him in Iran. Jerin Joseph, son of Jose and Laisamma (Anjilimootil), has been unreachable for several weeks, causing significant distress to his kin.
Background of the Internship
Jerin, a graduate of a Merchant Navy course in Chennai, travelled to Iran on July 27 last year to undertake a nine-month professional internship. According to his family, he had been in regular contact until late February.
Timeline of Disappearance
The timeline of his disappearance coincides with the escalation of geopolitical hostilities in the Middle East:
- February 27: Jerin sent his final message to his family.
- Post-February 27: All communication ceased. Family members report that they have been unable to reach him via calls or messaging platforms.
- Current Status: The family believes the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict may be the primary reason for the communication blackout.
Official Responses
When the family contacted Jerin’s college authorities in Chennai, they were reportedly informed that Jerin is safe. The institution maintained that his return is delayed due to the current regional instability and that he would be sent home once the situation de-escalates.
"We haven't heard from him or been able to get through to him since late February. While the college says he is safe, the lack of direct contact is deeply worrying," the family stated.
Government Intervention
Dissatisfied with the vague assurances from the college, the family has formally submitted a petition to the Chief Minister of Kerala. They are seeking government intervention to establish contact with Jerin through diplomatic channels and ensure his swift and safe repatriation.
