New Delhi: Serious concerns have been raised following allegations that the Delhi office of the United News of India (UNI), one of the country’s oldest news agencies, was forcibly vacated by police authorities on Friday evening.
The office, located on Rafi Marg, was reportedly cleared following directives from the Land and Development Office (L&DO). According to claims made by The Statesman, which owns UNI, police personnel allegedly intimidated staff and used force during the eviction process. It has also been alleged that employees, including women, were subjected to physical assault.
Journalists and media workers staged protests condemning the action, describing it as an attack on press freedom. The Statesman strongly criticized the move, terming it an infringement on the independence of the media.
Officials indicated that the eviction followed action initiated by the Land and Development authorities due to alleged non-compliance with regulatory norms concerning the allotted property. The land on Rafi Marg had originally been allocated to UNI by the Land and Development Board.
UNI had approached the High Court seeking relief; however, its petition was dismissed, paving the way for the enforcement action.
The incident has since triggered a wider debate on institutional autonomy and the safeguarding of media rights in the country.
