A commanding performance by Virat Kohli not only powered Royal Challengers Bengaluru to a historic victory but also drew enthusiastic reactions from the franchise’s new leadership, including Ananya Birla and Aryaman Birla.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru have been making headlines both on and off the field following a landmark ownership change. A consortium led by the Aditya Birla Group recently acquired the franchise from United Spirits Limited for a record $1.78 billion, making it the most expensive team in Indian Premier League history.
The team quickly justified the buzz on the field, delivering a dominant performance in the IPL 2026 opener. RCB defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by six wickets, chasing down a daunting target of 202 in under 16 overs—the fastest successful chase of a 200-plus total in the league’s history.
Among those witnessing the emphatic victory were Ananya and Aryaman Birla, both key figures within the Aditya Birla Group. As the winning runs were scored, the siblings were seen applauding from the stands, celebrating the team’s explosive start to the season. They are the children of industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla.
New Ownership and Leadership
The newly formed ownership consortium also includes major global investors such as Blackstone (through its BXPE arm), Bolt Ventures led by David Blitzer, and the Times of India Group. While the acquisition is awaiting formal approval from the Board of Control for Cricket in India, a key leadership decision has already been announced, with Aryaman Birla appointed as chairman of the franchise.
Aryaman Birla’s Cricketing Background
Aryaman’s appointment brings a unique blend of corporate leadership and cricketing experience. Unlike many franchise executives, he has firsthand exposure to the sport. He pursued cricket seriously in his youth, relocating from Mumbai to Madhya Pradesh at the age of 17 to advance his career.
He also trained in England, representing West Hampstead Cricket Club and the London Schools Cricket Association under the guidance of former cricketer Paul Weekes.
Aryaman made his domestic debut in 2017 in the Ranji Trophy. Prior to that, he had an impressive run in the CK Nayudu Trophy, where he topped the scoring charts with 602 runs at an average of 75.25, including three centuries.
With a high-profile ownership transition and a record-setting start on the field, Royal Challengers Bengaluru appear poised for a transformative season, blending fresh leadership with renewed on-field momentum.
