Iran Signals Conditional Openness to US Mediation via Pakistan Amid Ongoing Conflict

Theran: Iran has conveyed conditional willingness to engage in mediation with the United States through Pakistan, according to senior diplomatic sources, indicating a potential opening for dialogue amid the continuing regional conflict.

The proposed mediation framework, expected to be discussed in Islamabad, is being viewed as a significant diplomatic development that could pave the way for a temporary ceasefire or de-escalation of hostilities.

Tehran Sets Conditions for Engagement

Sources indicate that Tehran has agreed in principle to participate in mediation, subject to a set of key conditions. Foremost among these is an immediate cessation of attacks on Iran, along with credible assurances that future military strikes will not occur.

Iran has also sought firm guarantees from regional stakeholders—including Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt—that they will play an active role in ensuring that Washington addresses Tehran’s security concerns.

A quadrilateral meeting involving these countries, hosted by Pakistan on March 29–30, is expected to deliberate on Iran’s conditions and outline a structured roadmap for mediation.

Pakistan Intensifies Diplomatic Outreach

Islamabad has emerged as a key channel for diplomatic engagement. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a detailed telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, reaffirming Pakistan’s support for efforts aimed at de-escalation and the establishment of security guarantees.

In parallel, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar engaged with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi to coordinate the agenda for the upcoming high-level talks in Islamabad.

Iranian leadership has acknowledged Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts, signalling openness to initiatives designed to reduce tensions, even as Tehran continues to publicly deny engaging in direct negotiations with Washington.

Quadrilateral Talks to Shape De-escalation Framework

According to diplomatic sources, foreign ministers from the four participating nations will focus on identifying mechanisms to reduce tensions and establish a pathway toward negotiations.

Hakan Fidan indicated that discussions would assess the trajectory of the conflict and explore actionable measures to prevent further escalation. The participating countries are seen as strategically positioned to facilitate dialogue, given their regional influence and exposure to disruptions in critical energy routes, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz.

Breakthrough Window Emerging

Sources suggest that Iran has already communicated its response to a US proposal via Islamabad. Should the quadrilateral group succeed in securing credible assurances addressing Tehran’s core concerns, a temporary ceasefire or pause in hostilities could follow.

A potential breakthrough is being anticipated within a narrow window between March 31 and April 7, with the outcome of the Islamabad talks expected to play a decisive role in shaping the next phase of the conflict and broader regional stability.
