Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday held a telephonic conversation with Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, to discuss the escalating conflict in West Asia and its implications for regional stability, energy security, and global trade routes.
In a post on X, Modi stated that the two leaders exchanged views on the evolving situation in the region, expressing concern over recent developments. “Spoke with Crown Prince and PM of Saudi Arabia, HRH Prince Mohammed bin Salman and discussed the ongoing conflict in West Asia,” the Prime Minister said.
He reiterated India’s firm stance against attacks on critical infrastructure, particularly in the energy sector. “I reiterated India’s condemnation of attacks on regional energy infrastructure,” Modi added.
Focus on Maritime Security
Both leaders underscored the importance of maintaining secure and uninterrupted maritime movement, amid rising concerns over the safety of key shipping lanes. The Strait of Hormuz and other vital sea routes have emerged as potential flashpoints in the ongoing conflict, raising fears of disruptions to global oil, gas, and commercial cargo flows.
“We agreed on the need to ensure freedom of navigation and keep shipping lines open and secure,” Modi noted.
India’s Strategic and Diaspora Interests
The Prime Minister also expressed appreciation for the Saudi leadership’s continued support for the Indian community residing in the Kingdom. “Thanked him for his continued support for the welfare of the Indian community in Saudi Arabia,” he said.
The conversation highlights India’s proactive diplomatic engagement in the Gulf region, as New Delhi seeks to safeguard its energy interests, ensure the safety of its diaspora, and advocate for stability in a region that remains critical to its economic and strategic priorities.
