Mumbai Police Arrest Jamtara-Based Cyber Fraud Accused in ₹6 Lakh Scam Targeting Bombay High Court Judge

Mumbai: In a significant breakthrough, Mumbai Police have arrested a cyber fraud accused from Jamtara, Jharkhand, for allegedly duping a Bombay High Court judge of ₹6.02 lakh through a sophisticated phishing scam involving a fake customer care number and a malicious application.

The arrest was carried out by the Colaba (Cuffe Parade) Police with assistance from the Jamtara Cyber Cell and Karmatanr Police. The accused, identified as 25-year-old Mazar Alam alias Israel Miyan, is believed to be involved in multiple cybercrime cases across the country.

According to investigators, the fraud was executed under the pretext of redeeming credit card reward points. On February 28, the judge reportedly attempted to contact the bank’s customer care service. When the official helpline was unavailable, he searched online and unknowingly dialled a fake number created by cybercriminals.

Upon contacting the number, the victim received a WhatsApp link to download an 18 MB application file (APK). As the file could not be opened on his iPhone, the fraudsters—posing as customer care executives—advised him to use an Android device.

Trusting the instructions, the judge inserted his SIM card into an Android phone belonging to his domestic help and proceeded to install the application. While attempting to redeem reward points, he entered his credit card details into the app. Shortly thereafter, approximately ₹6 lakh was fraudulently transferred from his account.

Realising the fraud, the judge immediately lodged a complaint with Mumbai Police, following which a case was registered and an investigation was launched. After nearly 10 days of tracking and coordination across states, the accused was apprehended.

Police officials stated that the accused is not a first-time offender and is suspected to be linked to at least 36 cybercrime cases registered across 10 states.

The incident once again highlights the growing sophistication of cyber fraud networks, particularly those operating out of regions such as Jamtara, and underscores the importance of verifying official contact details and avoiding the download of unverified applications.
