Thiruvananthapuram: BJP State President Rajeev Chandrasekhar has formally requested Kerala Governor Rajendra V. Arlekar to grant immediate assent to the proposed Malayalam Language Bill. During a meeting with the Governor on Tuesday, Chandrasekhar described the legislation as a vital measure to reinforce Kerala's cultural identity and bolster the self-respect of its people.
The BJP leader highlighted that making Malayalam the primary language of governance would be a landmark step for the state. He noted that cultural leaders, who recently met with the Prime Minister to express gratitude for officially recognizing the state’s name as "Keralam," had also voiced a strong demand for the approval of this Language Bill.
Key Highlights of the Proposal:
- Improved Governance: Ensuring that government orders, official documents, and public services are accessible in Malayalam will bridge the communication gap between the administration and the public, fostering greater transparency.
- Cultural Connection: Strengthening the use of the mother tongue in official domains will help the younger generation build a deeper emotional connection with their linguistic heritage and state culture.
- Safeguarding Minorities: Chandrasekhar emphasized that while promoting Malayalam is essential, it should not come at the cost of marginalizing linguistic minorities. He stressed the continued importance of English and Hindi for the educational and professional advancement of Kerala's youth.
- Calibrated Implementation: The leader called for a phased rollout of the law, suggesting well-defined rules, robust translation mechanisms, and special provisions for border districts to ensure a smooth transition without social exclusion.
He concluded by stating that the formal adoption of Malayalam in the official sphere, much like the adoption of the name "Keralam," would give Malayalis a renewed sense of pride and enhance the state's prestige on a national level.
