India has increasingly solidified its role as the central pillar of energy security for its South Asian neighbors. Through the strategic efforts of the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and other key entities, India provides a consistent supply of essential petroleum products—including petrol, diesel, and Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF)—to Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.
This regional cooperation is a direct manifestation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ Policy. Launched in 2014, this diplomatic framework prioritizes regional stability, connectivity, and economic integration, positioning India not merely as a supplier but as a critical regional stabilizer.
Bangladesh: Immediate Response to the West Asia Crisis
Amidst the escalating US-Israel-Iran conflict and rapidly depleting domestic reserves, Bangladesh has formally requested an additional 50,000 metric tonnes of diesel from India over the next four months to avert a national shortage.
The bilateral response has been swift:
- Emergency Consignment: An immediate 5,000 tonnes of diesel arrived in Bangladesh on March 10.
- Infrastructure Advantage: The use of dedicated cross-border pipelines has proven vital in reducing transportation costs and ensuring a reliable flow of fuel.
- Economic Impact: This supply chain is essential for sustaining Bangladesh’s transportation sector, power generation, and large-scale agricultural operations.
India as a Regional Energy Hub
India’s emergence as a regional energy hub provides a safety net for neighboring economies during periods of global supply chain volatility. By streamlining the export of refined petroleum, India helps its neighbors manage energy security and maintain essential public services.
The ‘Neighbourhood First’ approach has transformed India’s foreign policy into a tangible economic lifeline for South Asia. As global geopolitical tensions continue to pressure energy markets, India’s robust refinery capacity and commitment to its neighbors serve as a cornerstone for regional resilience.
