SARLI, HIMACHAL PRADESH — In a rare and harrowing display of survival instinct, a young man in Himachal Pradesh’s Sarli village successfully fended off and killed a leopard using only his bare hands after being ambushed on Tuesday morning.
The Encounter
The survivor, identified as Pravesh Sharma, was walking through his farmland at approximately 7:00 AM to collect milk when he was blindsided by the predator. Authorities believe the leopard was a juvenile, approximately one year old.
According to local reports, the confrontation escalated into a desperate, 12-minute struggle for life. Sharma managed to seize the leopard’s jaws and deliver a series of powerful blows to its head and neck. While the animal was killed in the encounter, Sharma sustained several injuries. He was treated at a local medical facility, where doctors confirmed his condition is stable and not life-threatening.
A Pattern of Predation
This specific leopard had reportedly been terrorizing the area for days. Just hours before the encounter with Sharma, a scooterist narrowly escaped a similar strike. Residents of Sarli expressed growing frustration with the Forest Department, alleging that despite repeated requests to install traps in response to recent sightings, no preventive action was taken until this tragedy occurred.
Ecological Concerns and Official Response
Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Rajkumar Sharma visited the site following the incident, providing Sharma with an immediate relief payment of ₹5,000.
Forest officials noted that while leopards are typically nocturnal hunters, this daylight incursion into a residential area is a troubling indicator of shifting wildlife behaviors. "The presence of these predators in human settlements during early morning hours suggests a significant disruption in their natural habitats," a department spokesperson stated.
The incident is part of a broader surge in human-wildlife conflict across Himachal Pradesh. In December, a series of attacks in the Mandi district left one dead and five injured, eventually leading villagers to take the law into their own hands to neutralize the threat.
