2026 T20 World Cup: Semifinal Fever Grips the Nation; What Happens if Rain Interrupted the Play? ICC Rules Explained

MUMBAI — After a high-octane League Stage and an intense Super 8 round, the 2026 T20 World Cup has reached its penultimate stage. The four cricketing giants—India, South Africa, New Zealand, and England—have officially secured their spots in the semifinals.

As the knockout battles loom, fans and officials are keeping a close watch on the skies, as weather conditions could play a decisive role in determining the finalists.

The Semifinal Lineup

The stage is set for two blockbuster encounters:

  • First Semifinal: New Zealand will face South Africa on March 4, 2026, in Kolkata.
  • Second Semifinal: India is scheduled to clash with England on March 5, 2026, at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

While the exit of the West Indies from the tournament has cleared the path for these four teams, the stakes have never been higher for the Men in Blue as they aim for the ultimate glory.

The "Rain Rule": What the ICC Guidelines State

In the event of a washout or a match being abandoned due to persistent rain, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has established specific protocols to ensure a fair progression:

  • Reserve Day: Both semifinals have a designated reserve day. If play is not possible on the scheduled date, the match will resume or be played on the following day.
  • Minimum Overs: For a result to be achieved in the knockout stages, both teams must bat for a minimum of 10 overs each (unless a result is reached earlier).
  • Super 8 Standings: If the match cannot be completed even on the reserve day, the team that finished higher in their respective Super 8 group will automatically advance to the final.

Advantage India?

The current standings from the Super 8 stage could prove vital. If the second semifinal in Mumbai is completely washed out, India’s superior performance and ranking in the Super 8 round would likely grant them a direct ticket to the final, leaving England sidelined by the elements.
