Tehran: Iran’s military has stated that it has no intention of closing the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime oil routes, despite the ongoing conflict in the region.
A spokesperson for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said that while the strait will remain open, vessels passing through the strategic waterway will be responsible for ensuring their own security given the current wartime conditions.
The military also clarified that Iran will not target commercial ships using the route, except those belonging to Israel or the United States.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi, in an interview with French media, said that Iran does not trust the United States. He accused Washington of not only deceiving Iran but also undermining international diplomacy.
In a separate development, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the United States is looking for a leader capable of governing Iran. Her remarks came shortly after former U.S. President Donald Trump indicated that the United States could play a role in determining Iran’s next leadership.
Leavitt stated that U.S. intelligence agencies and government officials have identified certain potential figures, though she declined to reveal further details. She also claimed that the United States is seeking to gain control of Iran’s airspace, suggesting that this objective could be achieved within four to six weeks.
Trump had earlier asserted that the United States would not consider any agreement with Iran unless the country agrees to an unconditional surrender.
The developments come amid escalating geopolitical tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, raising concerns over regional stability and the security of vital global shipping routes.
