Assam: Prateek Bordoloi, the Indian National Congress candidate from Margherita for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, has withdrawn from the contest, citing “changed circumstances” following his father’s defection to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
In a letter addressed to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Prateek Bordoloi stated that continuing as a candidate under the present circumstances would not be appropriate. He emphasised the need to avoid any ambiguity regarding his commitment to the party.
“I believe the people of Margherita and the countless dedicated Congress workers deserve absolute clarity and confidence in the party’s candidate. It would be unfair to them if any confusion or perception arises regarding my commitment or the party’s position,” he wrote.
Despite stepping down from the electoral race, Bordoloi reaffirmed his faith in the Congress and expressed his willingness to serve the party in any capacity deemed appropriate by its leadership.
Father’s Defection Triggers Decision
The development came shortly after his father, Pradyut Bordoloi, resigned as a Member of Parliament from Nagaon and joined the BJP. Addressing the situation, Pradyut Bordoloi said he had advised his son to make an independent decision, without being influenced by his political move.
Meanwhile, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee chief Gaurav Gogoi extended sympathy and moral support to Prateek Bordoloi in light of the circumstances.
The withdrawal underscores the political sensitivities surrounding party loyalty and public perception ahead of the Assembly elections, particularly in regions witnessing high-profile defections.
