LUCKNOW: In a chilling act of retaliation, a 22-year-old fugitive wanted for the rape of a minor allegedly broke into the victim’s home and shot her dead in Uttar Pradesh’s Basti district early Tuesday morning. The accused, who had been evading arrest since December, remains at large.
Details of the Incident
According to the police, the incident occurred around 1:00 AM on Tuesday. The perpetrator reportedly gained entry through the rear door of the victim’s residence. He fired two shots at the 17-year-old girl—targeting her head and neck—while she was sleeping alongside her brother.
The assailant also physically assaulted and threatened the victim's brother during the attack. When the girl’s mother, who was sleeping outside, rushed in to intervene, the accused opened fire on her as well, though she narrowly escaped unharmed.
A History of Harassment
The victim's family identified the attacker as a resident of the same village. Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shyamakant stated that the accused had a history of violent coercion against the minor.
"The accused had allegedly drugged and raped the girl in December last year. He recorded the act and used the footage to blackmail her, eventually leaking portions of it on social media on December 16," ASP Shyamakant said.
Following the leak, the family lodged a formal complaint. An FIR was registered on December 17 at the Kalwari police station under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Information Technology (IT) Act. The suspect had been absconding since the case was filed.
Police Action
The Basti police have launched a massive manhunt to apprehend the suspect. Multiple specialized teams have been formed to track his whereabouts and bring him to justice. Local authorities have assured the family that the investigation is being prioritized to ensure a swift arrest.
