PUNE – In a chilling breakthrough reminiscent of a psychological thriller, the Pune Rural Police have apprehended a 25-year-old farmer implicated in the serial killings of two young boys. The investigation has debunked a long-standing theory that the deaths were the result of leopard attacks, revealing instead a predatory human actor operating within the sugarcane fields of Shirur Taluka.
The breakthrough occurred following the discovery of a 12-year-old boy's body last Tuesday. The victim had disappeared during daylight hours after returning from school to play near his home. Following an intensive search by his family, his remains were located near a well at approximately 5:30 PM. Preliminary forensic examinations suggested foul play and potential abuse, prompting authorities to deploy multiple specialized units to the scene.
A Pattern of Deception
The investigation quickly shifted focus toward a 25-year-old distant relative of the victim. Under interrogation, inconsistencies in the suspect's account led detectives to re-examine a strikingly similar "cold case" from June 2024.
In that earlier incident, an 11-year-old boy was found dead in the exact same sugarcane plantation. At the time, due to the nature of the injuries and the geographical location, local authorities had classified the tragedy as an accidental death caused by a leopard. However, fresh scrutiny of the 2024 forensic data, coupled with the evidence from the recent slaying, confirmed a definitive match in the modus operandi.
| Case Timeline | Victim Age | Initial Classification | Current Status |
| June 2024 | 11 Years | Accidental (Wildlife Attack) | Confirmed Homicide |
| March 2026 | 12 Years | Suspicious Death | Confirmed Homicide |
Judicial Proceedings
The suspect, whose identity is being withheld pending further legal formalities, is currently in police custody. Officials noted that the perpetrator utilized the dense cover of the sugarcane crops and the known presence of leopards in the region to mask his crimes, banking on the assumption that any injuries would be attributed to local wildlife.
The Pune Rural Police are now conducting a wider sweep of missing person reports and unsolved deaths in the Shirur region over the last three years to determine if there are further victims linked to the suspect.
