The Lok Sabha has revoked the suspension of eight Opposition Members of Parliament, bringing an end to a prolonged standoff during the ongoing Budget Session. The decision was taken after a motion moved by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and approved by Speaker Om Birla.
The MPs, who had been suspended on February 3 for unruly conduct during protests in the House, paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi following the revocation of their suspension.
MPs Involved
The suspended members included seven from the Indian National Congress and one from the Communist Party of India (Marxist):
- Gurjeet Singh Aujla
- Hibi Eden
- Dean Kuriakose
- Amrinder Singh Raja Warring
- Manickam Tagore
- Prashant Yadaorao Padole
- C. Kiran Kumar Reddy
- S. Venkatesan
Background to the Suspension
The suspensions followed chaotic scenes in the House after a speech by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi was reportedly disallowed. The speech was linked to revelations in a book by former Army Chief M. M. Naravane concerning Chinese aggression.
During the protests, several MPs climbed onto tables and threw papers towards the Chair, prompting disciplinary action.
Revocation and Appeal for Decorum
Moving the motion to revoke the suspensions, Rijiju emphasised the importance of maintaining parliamentary decorum and urged members to observe a “Laxman Rekha” to ensure the smooth functioning of the House.
Speaker Om Birla also called on MPs to refrain from using placards or AI-generated images during proceedings in the future.
Reactions from Opposition Leaders
Welcoming the development, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said, “This is a good thing. It should happen from both sides,” stressing the need to uphold the dignity of Parliament.
Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor described the move as a positive step. “It’s a very good development that this sad spectacle of eight of our colleagues sitting on the steps every day, suspended and unable to participate, has been ended,” he said.
Tharoor added that while there may have been lapses in judgement, prolonged exclusion of elected representatives undermines democratic functioning. He expressed hope that assurances of improved conduct from both sides would be honoured.
The revocation of the suspensions is expected to ease tensions in the House and facilitate smoother proceedings in the remainder of the Budget Session.
