US Deploys 3,500 Marines to Middle East in Largest Military Buildup in 20 Years

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has announced a significant escalation in American military presence in the Middle East, with approximately 3,500 Marines and sailors arriving aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli on March 27. The deployment marks what officials describe as the largest US military buildup in the region in nearly two decades.

In an official statement posted on X, CENTCOM confirmed that personnel aboard the USS Tripoli had entered its area of responsibility, reinforcing an already substantial American footprint of roughly 50,000 troops stationed across the Middle East. Images released by the command show Marines in full combat gear, underscoring the operational readiness of the incoming forces.

The USS Tripoli is equipped with a range of advanced military assets, including transport and strike fighter aircraft, as well as amphibious assault and tactical support systems. The vessel is carrying elements of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, which is typically based in Japan. The unit had been conducting exercises near Taiwan before receiving orders to redeploy to the Middle East nearly two weeks ago.

This deployment is part of a broader reinforcement effort. The amphibious assault ship USS Boxer, along with two additional naval vessels and another Marine Expeditionary Unit, has also been directed to the region from San Diego, further expanding the scale of US operations.

The growing military presence has intensified speculation that Washington may be preparing contingency plans for a potential ground operation inside Iran. Such a move would represent a significant escalation, even as Donald Trump has repeatedly maintained that diplomatic efforts with Tehran are ongoing and that the United States does not intend to deploy ground troops for combat.

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, the additional forces are intended to provide the US administration with a broader spectrum of military options amid the ongoing conflict, which began following US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28. The reinforcements are expected to operate alongside thousands of paratroopers and Marines already deployed in the region.

While the exact positioning of the newly deployed forces remains undisclosed, reports suggest they are likely to be stationed within operational range of key Iranian targets, including Kharg Island, a critical hub for Iran’s oil exports.

Meanwhile, rhetoric from Tehran has grown increasingly confrontational. The English-language daily Tehran Times issued a stark warning on its front page, declaring under the headline “Welcome To Hell” that any US troops entering Iranian territory would “leave only in a coffin,” highlighting the heightened tensions surrounding the evolving situation.
