In a significant setback for five-time champions Chennai Super Kings, former India captain MS Dhoni is expected to miss the opening two weeks of the Indian Premier League 2026 season due to a calf strain, the franchise confirmed on Saturday, March 28.
Dhoni is currently undergoing rehabilitation, with the team stating that his participation will depend on his recovery progress. “MS Dhoni is currently undergoing rehabilitation for a calf strain. As a result, he is likely to miss the first two weeks of TATA IPL 2026,” the franchise said in an official update.
Chennai Super Kings are scheduled to begin their campaign against the Rajasthan Royals on March 30 in Guwahati.
Possible Return Timeline
If recovery proceeds as expected, Dhoni could return for CSK’s clash against the Delhi Capitals in mid-April or the subsequent fixture against the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Leadership and Squad Adjustments
In Dhoni’s absence, wicketkeeping responsibilities may be handed to Sanju Samson, who joined the franchise ahead of the IPL 2026 auction. Samson is widely regarded as a long-term leadership option within the CSK setup.
The franchise had secured Samson in a high-profile trade deal involving Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran moving to Rajasthan.
Dhoni’s Continued Impact
Despite retiring from international cricket in 2020, Dhoni has remained a key figure in the IPL. In the 2025 season, he featured in all 14 matches for CSK, scoring 196 runs at a strike rate of 135.17.
He also stepped in as captain during the previous season after Ruturaj Gaikwad was sidelined with an injury.
At 44, Dhoni’s participation this season would make him the oldest Indian player to feature in the IPL, surpassing former Mumbai Indians spinner Pravin Tambe.
CSK Looking to Bounce Back
Chennai Super Kings will be aiming for a turnaround after a disappointing 2025 campaign, where they finished at the bottom of the table with just four wins from 14 matches.
Dhoni’s absence at the start of the season presents an early challenge, but the franchise will be hopeful of his return as they look to rebuild momentum in IPL 2026.
