Narendra Modi is set to hold a virtual meeting with chief ministers on Friday evening (March 27) to review the country’s preparedness in light of the ongoing conflict in West Asia, with a particular focus on energy security.
The interaction, to be conducted via video conferencing, will assess the readiness of states and Union Territories to manage potential disruptions in fuel supply and ensure coordinated action under the “Team India” framework.
The meeting follows an all-party briefing convened by the Centre a day earlier, where leaders were updated on the evolving situation in West Asia. The discussion underscored the potential economic implications of the conflict, particularly the emerging risks to global energy supply chains.
A key concern highlighted was the disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime corridor through which nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas supplies transit.
The all-party meeting was chaired by Rajnath Singh and attended by senior leaders across the political spectrum, including Amit Shah, S. Jaishankar, Hardeep Singh Puri, and Kiren Rijiju.
During the session, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri presented a comprehensive assessment of the geopolitical developments and their potential impact on India. Puri outlined the country’s energy preparedness, detailing fuel reserves and contingency measures, while Jaishankar elaborated on India’s diplomatic stance, emphasising a balanced approach in maintaining relations with both Israel and Iran.
The Centre urged political parties to present a unified front on the issue, stressing that divergent messaging could create unnecessary public anxiety. It expressed confidence that both the government and the opposition would act in coordination to ensure stability and reassure citizens during the evolving crisis.
