New Delhi: India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Saturday dismissed reports that billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk participated in a recent phone conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, clarifying that the discussion was strictly bilateral.
The clarification comes in response to a report by The New York Times, which had claimed that Musk joined the call held on March 24, describing it as an unusual instance of a private individual being involved in a high-level diplomatic exchange amid the ongoing West Asia conflict.
Rejecting the claim, an MEA spokesperson stated, “We have seen the story. The telephone conversation on 24 March was between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump only.” The spokesperson further added that the call provided an opportunity for both leaders to exchange views on the evolving situation in West Asia.
Focus on West Asia and Energy Security
The conversation between Modi and Trump took place against the backdrop of escalating tensions in the region following the US-Israeli strikes on Iran. Discussions reportedly centred on regional stability, de-escalation efforts, and the importance of safeguarding global energy supply routes.
In a public statement, Prime Minister Modi emphasised the significance of maintaining open and secure maritime corridors, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global oil shipments.
“India supports de-escalation and restoration of peace at the earliest. Ensuring that the Strait of Hormuz remains open, secure and accessible is essential for the whole world,” Modi said, adding that both leaders agreed to remain in close contact on efforts aimed at ensuring peace and stability.
US President Praises India–US Ties
Separately, President Trump reiterated his positive outlook on bilateral relations, with a message shared by the US Embassy in India. In the statement, Trump described his relationship with Prime Minister Modi as highly effective, noting that both leaders “get things done.”
He further expressed confidence that the India–US partnership would continue to strengthen in the coming period.
The diplomatic engagement and subsequent clarification come at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty, with global powers intensifying coordination to manage the fallout of the West Asia crisis and ensure stability in critical economic and energy corridors.
