Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has issued a strong message to neighbouring countries, urging them not to allow the United States and Israel to conduct military operations from their territory if they seek “development” and “peace.”
The statement comes as the conflict in West Asia enters its second month, drawing in several countries across the region, including Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Kuwait and Qatar. With the United States reportedly utilising military bases in Gulf nations to launch strikes against Iran, Tehran has responded with retaliatory actions targeting locations linked to these operations.
In a post on X, President Pezeshkian reiterated Iran’s stance on military engagement, stating that the country does not initiate preemptive attacks but will respond decisively if its infrastructure or economic assets are targeted. He further warned regional nations against facilitating foreign military operations from their soil.
Pakistan Steps Up Mediation Efforts
Meanwhile, Shehbaz Sharif revealed that President Pezeshkian emphasised the importance of trust as a prerequisite for dialogue aimed at de-escalating tensions between Iran and the United States, according to reports by Reuters.
Iran has also acknowledged Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts, with Pezeshkian reportedly appreciating Islamabad’s role in seeking a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
Pakistan has increasingly positioned itself as a key intermediary in efforts to reduce hostilities. In this context, high-level diplomatic engagements are underway, with foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Turkey scheduled to visit Pakistan for discussions focused on the evolving situation in West Asia.
According to Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry, these meetings will involve “in-depth discussions” on a range of issues, particularly efforts to de-escalate regional tensions. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar is expected to hold bilateral talks with his counterparts, and the visiting delegations are also scheduled to meet Prime Minister Sharif.
Rising Regional Stakes
As the conflict continues, concerns are mounting over its broader regional implications, especially given the involvement—direct or indirect—of multiple Gulf nations. Iran’s latest message underscores growing tensions surrounding the use of foreign military bases and the risk of further escalation across the region.
Diplomatic initiatives led by regional players, particularly Pakistan, are now seen as critical in preventing the conflict from expanding further and in paving the way for potential negotiations.
