Nagaur: In a gruesome incident that has shocked the region, a 75-year-old woman was found murdered in Paldi Kalan village, with her mutilated body discovered inside a plastic sack dumped in nearby bushes.
The victim, identified as Nathi Devi Bawri, had left her home on the morning of March 16 to arrange fodder for her livestock. According to her family, she was wearing gold and silver jewellery valued at approximately ₹7 lakh. When she failed to return by evening, relatives and villagers initiated a search, which continued through the night.
The following day, March 17, villagers discovered a suspicious plastic sack in bushes near Pachranda village. Upon opening it, they found the mutilated remains of an elderly woman. Police later confirmed that the body had been dismembered, with the head and feet missing, and all jewellery removed—suggesting an attempt to conceal identity and evidence.
Investigation and Breakthrough
Police teams, led by Nagaur Superintendent of Police Roshan Meena, reached the scene and launched an intensive investigation. Forensic experts, sniffer dogs, and drone units were deployed to assist in the search for clues.
A slipper recovered near the site provided an initial lead, eventually directing investigators towards a local suspect. Subsequent searches uncovered bloodstains at a residence in the village, which forensic analysis confirmed as the crime scene.
Authorities also examined call records and location data from over 300 mobile numbers to trace movements around the time of the disappearance.
Arrest and Recovery
On March 20, police arrested Mukesh Bharti (38), a neighbour of the victim. Stolen jewellery and the suspected murder weapon—believed to be either an axe or an iron rod—were recovered from his possession.
According to investigators, the victim had gone to Bharti’s residence for fodder, where he allegedly attacked and killed her. Police allege that he later dismembered the body, packed the remains into multiple sacks, and transported them in a car before dumping them at different locations.
Motive and Ongoing Probe
While robbery is being considered the primary motive, investigators are also examining the possibility of a land dispute involving approximately 30 bigha of land. Police have not ruled out the involvement of additional suspects and stated that further inquiries are underway.
Family’s Protest and Aftermath
The victim’s family, who depend largely on daily wage labour, initially refused to perform the last rites, demanding the recovery of all body parts and swift justice. Following the recovery of additional remains, the final rites were conducted.
A meeting involving local representatives was also held in Degana to address concerns arising from the incident.
The case has once again highlighted concerns over rural safety and the need for swift investigative response in cases of violent crime.
