Dozens injured as Iranian warship sinks off Sri Lanka in ‘submarine attack’

The Iranian warship Iris Dena sank after a submarine attack off the coast of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankan media reported on Wednesday that at least 101 crew members were missing and 78 were injured. It was not clear who was behind the attack on the ship, which sources confirmed has now sunk.

Navy sources added, "At this stage, 79 people have been rescued and hospitalized, with one in critical condition. 101 people are believed to be missing."

The Sri Lankan Defense Ministry confirmed that a search is underway for the missing crew, about 25 miles south of the island. The injured sailors have been taken to a hospital in Galle, in the southern part of Sri Lanka.

The 180-crew frigate reported the distress call in the early hours of the morning. Sri Lankan officials, including Foreign Minister Vajirath Herath, are coordinating relief efforts.  The Maudge-class frigate Iris Dena was attacked by a submarine while it was returning to Iran after participating in the Milan 2026 multinational naval exercise in Visakhapatnam.
