Pentagon: Leader of Iranian Plot to Assassinate President Trump Killed in Strike

WASHINGTON — In a significant escalation of the ongoing conflict, the Pentagon announced on Wednesday that U.S. forces have successfully eliminated the Iranian official responsible for a unit linked to a high-profile assassination plot against President Donald Trump.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the operation during an operational briefing, stating the individual was "hunted down and killed" on Tuesday. While the official’s identity remains undisclosed, Hegseth emphasized that the strike serves as a direct response to Tehran’s alleged attempts to target American leadership.

"The leader of the unit who attempted to assassinate President Trump has been hunted down and killed," Hegseth told reporters at the Pentagon. "Iran tried to kill President Trump and President Trump got the last laugh."

Context of the Conflict

The targeted official was reportedly the head of a specialized unit within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The U.S. Justice Department had previously filed charges in 2024 regarding an Iranian-ordered plot to assassinate Trump during his time as president-elect.

The announcement comes just days after a joint U.S.-Israeli operation resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. President Trump addressed that operation on Sunday, framing it as a preemptive measure by stating, "I got him before he got me."

Operational Update: Day Four of Hostilities

General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, provided a broader assessment of the four-day-old war, noting a significant degradation of Iranian offensive capabilities:

  • Ballistic Missile Launches: Decreased by 86% since the commencement of hostilities.
  • One-Way Attack Drones: Deployment has dropped by 73%.
  • Air Superiority: U.S. forces have established localized control over the southern Iranian coastline.
  • "We will now begin to expand inland, striking progressively deeper into Iranian territory, and creating additional freedom of maneuver for U.S. forces," General Caine stated.

    Strategic Objectives

Despite the high-profile nature of the killing, Secretary Hegseth clarified that the specific unit leader was not the initial primary objective of the campaign. However, he noted that the individual was added to the target list to ensure accountability for the 2024 plot. Tehran continues to deny all allegations regarding assassination attempts against U.S. officials.

As U.S. strikes expand inland, the conflict appears to be entering a more intensive phase, with the Pentagon signaling a shift from coastal containment to deep-territory engagement.
