At least 11 people were injured following a violent clash that erupted inside a gurdwara in the Duisburg area of Moers, Germany, sending shockwaves through the local community.
Videos circulating on social media, reportedly recorded from within the place of worship, capture disturbing scenes of two groups engaged in a fierce confrontation. Participants were seen wielding sharp weapons, including knives and kirpans, during the altercation.
According to German newspaper Bild, nearly 40 individuals were involved in the clash, prompting a large-scale response from law enforcement agencies. Police deployed special tactical units to the scene amid reports that, in addition to bladed weapons, pepper spray and even a firearm were used.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the violence. Preliminary indications suggest that the incident may have stemmed from ongoing disputes over the election of a new management committee, as well as tensions surrounding control of gurdwara funds.
A 56-year-old member of the congregation, who witnessed the incident on Monday, described the attack as seemingly premeditated. “Shortly before the service began, the attackers suddenly used pepper spray on their opponents. Then one of them fired a pistol. I also saw knives,” the witness told Bild.
The witness further noted that disagreements between former and current board members had persisted for some time, primarily centred on issues of influence and authority within the institution. “There have been ongoing conflicts. It is largely about who holds the final say in the temple’s affairs. When the violence began, many people fled in panic. It could have been far worse, but fortunately no lives are in danger,” he added.
All 11 injured individuals received immediate medical attention at the scene from paramedics and an emergency physician. Police have detained at least one suspect, while investigations continue to establish the sequence of events and identify those involved.
The firearm reportedly used during the incident has not yet been recovered. However, authorities have indicated that shell casings found at the scene suggest it may have been a blank-firing pistol.
