TOKYO — A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck northern Japan on Monday afternoon, prompting the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) to issue an immediate tsunami warning for the region.
The seismic event occurred at 4:53 p.m. local time (0753 GMT), centered in the Pacific waters off the coast of northern Iwate Prefecture. Authorities have warned that tsunami waves could reach heights of up to three meters (10 feet) along the affected coastline.
The intensity of the tremor was felt far beyond the epicenter; in Tokyo, located hundreds of kilometers to the south, the quake was strong enough to cause significant swaying in large office buildings and high-rises.
Seismic Activity in Indonesia
This event follows a separate 5.9-magnitude earthquake that struck western Indonesia on Sunday. According to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, that quake originated 48 kilometers northwest of the Nias region off Sumatra island, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.
Indonesia is frequently subject to seismic volatility due to its position along the Pacific Ring of Fire. This area, where multiple tectonic plates converge, remains one of the most active zones in the world for both volcanic eruptions and recurrent earthquakes.
Local authorities in Japan continue to monitor coastal sea levels and have urged residents in high-risk areas to evacuate to higher ground immediately.
